Kalacakra Thangka, Statue & Amulet

Kalacakra, the Wheel of Time, is a multi-headed and multi-armed deity of the highest yoga tantra, whose practice ties cosmology to the calendar. The Kalacakra initiation, given by the Dalai Lama, is among the largest Tibetan Buddhist events in the world.

The Kalachakra mandala. At the centre of Kalachakra practice is the Kalachakra mandala — a circular palace diagram of the Wheel of Time with the deity at the centre and the calendar-deities of day, month and year arranged outward through its rings. Painted as a thangka it is read as a map of the cosmos and of the body; the same design appears on our Kalachakra thangkas and in the smaller painted tablets used on shrines.
